NADAV KANDER
Nadav Kander (born December 1, 1961) is a London-based photographer, artist and director. He is known for his portraiture and landscapes. He worked on a project called half life which documented Chernobyl 20 years after the explosion.
"Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power station exploded in 1986 leaving the surrounding area uninhabitable for many hundreds of years. I visited Chernobyl to mark its 20th anniversary, photographing the deserted spaces in what was once a model Soviet city. Home to more than 40,000 people, the apartments, schools and hospitals that were hastily left following the controversial evacuation are stark reminders of past lives, leaving a disturbing sense of quiet. An uneasiness that i have never previously experienced." |

Refined Photos
I photoshopped the images above to create a bigger contrast to make the images more eye-catching. The images below were my result.
Force Of Resistance
These photos were inspired by an artist called Tadao Cern, he took pictures of people as air was blowing on their faces, making them look different and interesting. I couldn't do that as I didn't have the right equipment so instead I decided to take pictures of my friends pushing their faces against a window. I took these pictures in school.

3 Strands
- Force of Resistance
- Force of Emotion
- Force of Relationships
Force Of Emotion
Bill Viola
I took these photos in school, against a white background, using a light to make them brighter. These photos consist of poeple expressing different emotions. I asked them to think of different things that would make them feel happy, sad and angry, and express how they felt. These are the results.
Happy
I took these images below in my photography class. I asked the people in my class to think of something that makes them happy and while they did that I took a picture of them. I photographed them against a white background to focus more on their faces and emotions. I refined these images my making the background bright plain colours to emphasise the happiness they feel as bright colours links to the idea of happiness and excitement. This also made the photos more eye-catching and intriguing.
Sad
The images below are of people in my class when I asked them to think of something sad that has happened to them or that they have heard of. I refined these images and made them black and white as
Angry
Force of Relationships
Dita Pepe
I also took these pictures in school. I went around school at lunch time and break and took pictures of different friends and teachers talking, hugging, laughing. I also took some pictures at home of my family to capture their relationship. This is the strand I will be developing.
Strand development
When I was working on my 'force of relationships' strand I discovered the artist above and decided to slightly change my strand. Instead of doing force of relationship I decided to do Force of Family. I want to do Force of Family because I think it's really interesting to be able to visualise the similarities between family members and also because I think it will be a fun project to work on.
Imposing Architecture
The images below are of different types of buildings. The images are taken from a low angle to create a sense of imposition and empowers the buildings. Therefore creating the force of architecture. I took these images in south bank and the Barbican as there are many big interesting buildings.
Final piece
For my final piece I edited three of the images above to make them look even more imposing and interesting. I used Photoshop to do this. I reflected the images to create a pattern. I used the transform feature to do this. I think this makes the images look more unique and intriguing as they look out of the ordinary and special. I was inspired by the artist Sasha Levin as her many of her photographs are of buildings taken from a low angle. It seems as if her aim when taking those photos was to create symmetry and patterns. Below are some images taken by her.
